Saragusa Saloon and Grocery – Houston

2406 Canal (historically German) St. – Houston TX (built 1906; also Wing-On Food Market, Tom’s Furniture Co., Melchor Furniture Co., Alegria’s Lounge)

Antonio (Anthony) “Tony” Saragusa, a Sicilian merchant who arrived in Houston via New York around 1895, first worked for Morales & Co. grocers where he met his wife Mary, the daughter of Martin Morales. He then worked for Feleo’s Grocery on Congress St. (next door to these buildings, now demolished), and took over the business around 1899. In 1906 he built his two-story brick building on Canal and Mary took over after his death in 1931, eventually selling the business.
