NotesThis older downtown Houston building, across from the Rice Hotel, has been hidden underneath a facade for decades. It was once home to the Rex Theatre and connected to the older version of of the current Binz Building next door. Pappas Confectionery opened in this building in December 1919, but by June 1920 Efstratios Pappas left and the name changed to St. Regis Confectionery Co. Efstratios was likely a relative of Houston’s famous Pappas restaurant family. Other tenants of this building included Rivoli Theater, Zay’s Restaurant and Confectionery, Grayson’s Apparel, Vogue Slipper Shop, and National Shirt Shops.

Quote from the December 19, 1919 issue of the Houston Post:

Many kinds of candy heretofor unseen on the market in Houston have been made by their experts and will be sold by the pound or in boxes.
[…]
One of the new kinds of candy invented by their candy expert is made of pure whipped cream dipped in candy coating.
[…]
The company eventually plans to make candy by the wholesale and to make Houston the center of the candy industry of the South.
