The Stowers Furniture building was restored by Spire Realty in 2003 and has largely sat vacant ever since its $14 million facelift. While Spire has been credited with restorations such as this and the Alden Hotel (formerly Sam Houston Hotel), they are also responsible for the demolition of the William Penn Hotel. All three were purchased in 2000.
The Stowers building is the only building left intact on its square block. The Montagu Hotel, Bond Department Store, Beatty West building, and everything in between was demolished to make way for the MainPlace skyscraper.
