About ten years later we find pallets of beverages, food, and medical equipment wasting away.

From a spacious family room a wide view of ‘nature’s living room’ is seen through a glass door. A terrace extends from the family room and is protected by a nine-foot overhang.

The kitchen breakfast bar seats four, but the diners can be multiplied by the use of a table. For those who eat while they TV, ample space has been provided in the living room. An ‘egg-crate’ partition divides the kitchen and living room. ‘Egg-crate’ here refers only to the design. Actually, this divider is solidly and permanently constructed of mahogany inserts in a pleasing checkerboard arrangement.

Glass gets its full chance to add to the beauty of a home and the comfort of its occupants in Builder Norris Pier’s house at 7622 Cayton. There is a massive glass wall in the living room and another in the family room. Both give views of patios attractively arranged for outdoor living.

The openness which characterizes the modern home is evidenced throughout this structure, and achieved by sloping ceilings which create not only the effect of spaciousness but also of height. Mr. Pier adds a decorative tone in the living, family rooms, and den through the use of beams and the beauty of exposed rafters.

Casual living is stressed in every phase of the family room. Random width flooring with peg construction has been used. The natural wood theme is further carried out in rich blond birch paneling. Through an eight-foot sliding glass door, one can go to the 21-foot patio with its generous terrace, filled with plants.

Home folks think a kitchen is as good as its cabinets and if you are one of those, or would like to be converted to the idea, the ‘Arrington-built Sample House’ at 7615 Cayton Street affords a rewarding visit.

Builder John Arrington has personalized his home with custom made cabinets crafted in his own mill. In addition, the garage will contain an exhibit of various types of custom made cabinets. Housed in the garage along with the display is a washer and drier by Frigidaire which also supplies the dishwasher, disposal, refrigerator-freezer combination and the completely built-in cooking units for the culinary center.

Mahogany kitchen cabinets give added depth to the rich mahogany lined kitchen walls. A built-in plastic top panelyte table divides the kitchen from the den, or family area, which is also mahogany paneled. Readily accessible to the family area is a patio with brick planter offering varied possibilities for ‘built-in’ landscaping.

From an advertisement for the 1956 Houston Parade of Homes brochure (thanks to GlenbrookValley.com):

The ‘Mangum Manor Parade Home,’ constructed by G.M. DeGeorge, is a house where hospitality ’surenough’ can be Texas-size. For at this home there is a huge outside entertainment area which could accommodate all the occupants’ friends and neighbors - with room left for the proverbial ‘one more.’ Mr. DeGeorge arranged his patio and open carport so that they could be converted into an entertainment area, suitable for dancing, games, or even banquet-size barbecues. Rain would never put a damper on these get-togethers, either. For a pink Ther-Mo roof completely protects the entire area. Nothing is overlooked to make this outdoor areas as attractive as possible. Space is even provided in the center of the patio for a tree to be planted in the future.

The ‘Mangum Manor’ home has another distinction. It’s a house with an angle - that is a house that is constructed at an angle on the lot at 7614 Cayton. Particular advantage of this design is seen in the arrangement of the bedrooms - an arrangement sure to please late sleepers. For these rooms are so planned that none faces any part of the neighboring homes.

Mr. DeGeorge’s home has the charm of a den fireplace, a feature generally found in homes far more expensive than one in a $19,000 price range. Not only that, but a product is used in the fireplace construction that is being used for the first time in Houston. This is Inca stone - a beautiful multi-colored inlaid block type of stone which covers the fireplace wall. The hearth itself is of Holiday hillstone.

Constructed of sandelwood-colored Holiday Hillstone, the house is given a contrast through a new plywood siding which has vertical grooving.

Entrance to the home is made through a flagstone hall from which one can move directly into the living room or the kitchen. Throughout this area and the adjoining den there is an airiness and openness adding to the beauty of the home. Sliding glass doors open from the den on to a covered patio and the living room can be enlarged by removal of the folding, louvered doors between the den and the living room.

The dinette area of the kitchen is paneled for four feet and over this is a gay wallpaper called ‘Fireside Cookbook.’ The wallpaper rates as a first-class conversation piece. It depicts early American cooking scenes in quaint and humorous style.

The housewife, in serving her folks meals, has her choice between a separate dining room for the big-scale dining, or a help yourself service bar dividing the kitchen from the breakfast room for informal eating.

Looking back for a moment for Early American touches: two carriage lamps are on each side of the front door, there are tall wooden shutters and columns, small-paned colonial windows. These give a hint of the interior touches such as maple-stained birch to blend with the Rock Maple furniture.

You can live right in the city and feel that you’re out in the wide open spaces - that is, you can if you live in Builder Harold P. Hill’s ranch style home, ‘Ranch Masterpiece’ at 7607 Cayton Street.

Mr. Hill’s Parade home has all the rustic qualities of the ranch home you’d ordinarily find deep in the countryside. A rough cedar rail fence encircles the lot and cedar posts extend from the garage to the front porch.
